Michael is Partner and Head of Financial Services at Mazars in the UK. He is an actuary with over 35 years’ experience in the insurance industry, gained both as a senior executive and a consultant.
He became Head of Financial Services UK in October 2016, having joined Mazars in 2013. From 2007 to 2013, he was Group CEO of Ecclesiastical Insurance, and before that, a partner with EY and Watson Wyatt. In the 1990s, he led GRE’s UK Personal lines business and in the 1980s its strategic planning activity.
His focus has been general insurance although he also has life assurance experience and a particular interest in ERM/operational risk. From September 2013 until 2015, he was Deputy Chair, IFoA GI Board before becoming Board Chair for the next two years. He has been keen to ensure that all aspects of the actuarial contribution (such as pricing, underwriting, reserving, capital and risk management) contribute effectively to the running and strategic development of insurance enterprises.
Michael is now Chair of the IFoA ‘Modelling, Analytics and Insights from Data’ working party, helping to establish a strategic vision for actuaries in the data science space. He has also just been elected to the IFoA Council.
Currently, Michael is researching the industry disruption taking place as a result of the boom in Insurtech. He presents on this topic, collaborating with lawyers and academics to provide a broader analysis of the issue.
